If you’ve been paying attention to the underground UK music scene the last few years, Palm Reader is probably a name you’re familiar with. Having toured up and down the country and throughout Europe with bands like Stray From The Path, Black Peaks and Cancer Bats, the Surrey quintet have been consistently making all the right noises since their formation way back in 2011. They haven’t released anything since their 2015 offering Beside The Ones We Love, a record which turned a lot of heads in their direction. Their intention to turn heads remains the same now, recently announcing the release of their upcoming full length Braille; a release that promises to marry their usual gargantuan riffage and rail-rattling brutality with hordes of atmosphere, intellect and melody. As a taste of what’s to come they’ve dropped their first single, Swarm. And what an taster it is.
The riffs are frantic and unpredictable, yet somehow remain structured and catchy. The drums are erratic and complex, yet remain solid and easy to follow. The vocals are venomous and filled with anger, yet the chorus melodies soar and soothe. The production on show here is clear and crisp, and is the most polished and well-rounded they’ve ever sounded. If this is the appetiser for Braille, I can’t wait to sample the rest of the menu. Everyone will be able to get a taste on April 6th, a date that should be marked on everyones musical calendar.
Catch them on tour with Rolo Tomassi in March/April across the UK and Europe. Couldn’t think of a more perfect band for them to tour with either; the yin to their yang.
