With Tech Fest looming this weekend, we thought it would be nice to chat with a few of the bands making an appearance at the festival. The Black Dahlia Murder were kind enough to oblige, as follows below. Be sure to check them out at 9:30PM on the Carillon Guitars Stage on Friday.
When you think of death metal, The Black Dahlia Murder is usually one of the first names to come to mind – why do you think this is?
Because you were born yesterday? I kid. I am actually quite flattered to even hear such a question. I suppose it’s because we’ve been hard at work since 2003, releasing albums each odd year and touring for them relentlessly. We also take pride in being the best live performers we can be, I feel like that has really been the strongest suit of the band. We want people to see us live once, and hopefully get hooked and want to come back. All of these things and a shit ton of sheer luck brought us here. Like a cockroach, we can’t be killed by normal means.
You’ve released albums every two years, so with Abysmal being almost two years old, can we expect a new release soon?
Yes, this Fall actually. In October. We are very excited to unfurl the 8th (!) chapter of the TBDM legacy. It’s chock full of melodic death metal mayhem and features our incredible new lead guitarist Brandon Ellis. He wrote some exciting songs for us and of course shredded the fuck out of the album.
What advice would you give to new touring bands?
Don’t do it. Haha. My actual advice is to keep expectations low. Don’t expect it to get much more glorious than full time camping.
At this year’s Tech Fest, what can we expect from your set?
You can expect much tech! We’ll be playing a set with tunes from all eras of the band, including some rarely heard Nocturnal tunes we’ve dusted off for its 10th anniversary. We hope to bring some wild energy to the festival and to see the crowd react with some crowd surfing, circle pitting, etc. to close out the evening. We want to bring all out fun to the festival, and leave our special TBDM mark on the patrons, scarring their minds forever.
This is your only festival appearance in the UK this year – why did you decide Tech Fest over some of the other, larger capacity festivals?
We chose Tech Fest because it seemed like an interesting alternative to the normal mixed fests. I think we are a highly technical band, and the line up was cool and different. I wanna show the tech nerds what the fuck is up!
Finally – if you could rewrite any part of TBDM’s history, what would it be and why?
I would tweak the album Miasma in a few ways. More macabre lyrics and artwork. I would also sing better on the first 3 albums if I had the chance, haha. I don’t have many regrets, honestly. I think it’s all lead us here, right where we want to be.
You heard it here first UKTF-ers… Nocturnal tunes will be making an appearance this weekend. You can catch us down the front!
