REVIEW: Venomwolf – Stormriding Power (Album)

By Sasha Clapham · On February 7, 2018

From the very depths of hell (or Glasgow), a raw and unforgiving band is set on taking 2018 by their teeth. Take note that this killer debut album, released via Iron Pegasus Records and mastered by metal maniac Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust, Tiger Junkies), is taking no prisoners. With previous productions of the EP Witch Of The Black Night and Demo Blood Ritual/ Sacrifice that was let rip two years ago, Stormriding Power has proven itself to be worth the wait.

The Summoning opens the record with formidable atmosphere, from hallowing bell tolls to the menacing shrieks echoing against the backdrop of a thunderstorm. Fusing elements of speed and black n’ roll, the tracks unfold with such raw energy unleashing blasphemic versification enough to rip your bloody face off. Chord progression is simple and structured, but the simplicity compliments the thick driving bass and filthy riffs to ensure the sound doesn’t lack depth. The track that really captivated me was One With The Fire as it’s loud, lethal and delivers a memorable assault of riffs. Oh and not to mention it beholds ethereal synths, all cleverly pieced together by sole member Duncan McLaren.

There is doubt about this album being heavily influenced by the first wave of black metal, the unrestrained attitude and disorientation gives nod to godfathers Bathory, Celtic Frost and eighties era Venom. It would be easy to categorise this release amongst the d-beat metal punk movement of the early eighties, the old school spin is timeless.

For a chance to capture the ferocity of Venomwolf in its purest form why not head down to one of these upcoming shows :

Savage Master (USA)// Dungeon// Venomwolf @ Nice n Sleazy, Glasgow 23.3.18
