While some of the more symphonic elements of black metal (unless they are just too over the top) can add an element of grandness to the music, it is, in this opinion, best served raw and the rawer the better as this is when the true savagery of the music is unleashed. Thankfully, Exile Aux Confins Des Tourments, the new album from prolific one man Swiss black metal band Enoid is the latter, the raw energy and darkness oozes through the speakers. This is in your face, hyper speed and hyper aggressive black metal, think Darkthrone rather than Dimmu Borgir and while there are keyboards used on the album, they create an unsettling atmosphere rather than being overbearing and over the top.
After a short and atmospheric intro, Exile Aux Confins Des Tourments explodes into life with the raw evil of Je t’arrecherai les cieux and the musical blasphemy doesn’t let up from then on throughout the albums eight tracks as Enoid unleashes the profane black metal assault.
Enoid’s music is instantly recognisable for those who like their black metal raw and unclean and tracks like La croix de mon exsistence and Noveau cycle destrecteur are prime slices of black metal that sound like an unholy mix of Mayhem and the aforementioned Darkthrone with a touch of Marduk and Ceremony Of Opposites era Samael thrown in there too and wouldn’t sound out of place played at the infamous Helvete circa 1992 and the torturous screams that act as the intro to La lumiere disparait seem to be wholly fitting to the entire project of the unholy musical chaos that blasts through the speakers.
The album ends with the ultra aggressive threats of Ode a la haine, a song that tones down the speed but ups the evil ante and turns out to be the heaviest song on the album and exudes an air of nasty menace with an epic nature and is a fitting end to what has gone before it.
The fact that there is only one person responsible for this hellish musical journey is commendable and the quality doesn’t waver over the entire album and will satisfy the needs of anyone who needs a fix of ultraviolent and sacrilegeous black metal.
