Melodic hardcore band Skies In Motion released their debut album ‘Life Lessons’ this year and have been taking the U.K. by storm. With their mix of emotional charged lyrics, catchy riffs and solid delivery these guys have big things coming their way and will be definitely one to watch in 2018. We had the pleasure of catching up with the guys and asking them a few questions. Check out what they had to say…
You’ve recently released your debut album what has the response been like to the album?
The response has been incredible. We’ve had amazing reviews from some great names in the industry, the turn out to our shows has increased tenfold, merch is flying off the walls but I guess the most important thing has been the amount of people that say they relate to the content of the album. The purpose of the album was not only to create an impacting sound but to also connect with our audience in a tangible way. Everyone that has listened to the album has given us an example of a song they relate to the most. That’s really satisfying.
You also just come off tour, how did that go and were there any highlights or memorable moments?
We had a very successful tour. The first two dates were supporting some large bands; the first date was Kingdom of Giants and the second was In Hearts Wake. Both favourites of ours. The rest of the tour was our headline release. Every show was great. People were moving like crazy, singing the words back to us and giving as much energy into spectating as we did performing (which is saying a lot). I think we’d all agree supporting In Heart’s Wake at one of our favourite venues (Rescue Rooms, Nottingham) was amazing. However, I think the main highlight of the tour was generally seeing people’s faces screaming the words back at us and playing to packed rooms all over the UK.
What is your favourite song off the album?
That’s a difficult one. It’s always hard to rate your own music objectively. I think we’ve all got our favourites for our own personal reasons. I think a lot of us our emotionally affected by Gonvena, as it’s a raw emotional anthem dedicated to the passing of Dave’s mother. It’s definitely one that gets our heart’s pounding and triggers goosebumps. Hopebringer is also a favourite, it’s the one we all go back to. It’s a very large sounding song that was written to reach out to our audience and provide a helping hand to anyone who is in need.
What plans has Skies In Motion got for 2018?
A lot. We’re planning to tour as much as we can. We want to get back out to Europe, we love it out there. As a band, we are looking to get onto the Festival circuit for 2018. I think we need to get on board with a good Booking Agent again, we work very hard as a DIY band and utilise all our own contacts as much as we can. So we are currently on the market and looking for a good agent to get us out there as much as possible.
We’ve done a lot of writing for the next album, so we’re also looking to knuckle down and get our material together for the next record. So keep an eye on us, we won’t stop moving.
Where do you get your inspiration from for your music?
We all get inspiration in different ways. Musically, we take influence from bands such as Killswitch Engage, Architects, While She Sleeps, The Ghost Inside and more. However, we don’t just limit ourselves to metal. A lot of our song writing formulas are taken from more popular music and we branch out as much as we can. The concepts of our material comes from our life experiences, we’ve all been through a lot and we know a lot of people out there have been through similar situations and far worse. So we take inspiration from our stories and the stories of others and unleash this in our writing process both musically and lyrically.
What music are you currently listening to?
Loathe, Wage War, Big Shaq, Logic, Kingdom of Giants, Post Malone, Veil of Maya, too many to count
How did you guys all meet and come together to form the band?
We’re just all good friends who enjoy playing music together. Similar interests, intentions, drive and passion. We’ve picked this line up because we all have one thing in common, we can all say “we don’t know where we would be without this band”. We’ve known each other for years. There’s been a couple line-up changes, but whoever steps in has always been a good friend that we’ve known for a while. We gotta stick together, you know?
If you could only play one song ever until the end of time what song would you pick (this can include a cover song)?
Davidian – Machine Head
What is your number one essential item to take on tour that you can’t live without?
Not sure. Sam’s is a Battenberg cake.
What shows have you got coming up?
19th November 2017 – Leicester, Firebug. We’re playing a charity fundraiser show for our friend Ben’s dad who recently passed away very quickly from Pancreatic Cancer. It’s for a good cause and some great bands are playing.
9th December 2017 – Nottingham, Rock City Basement – Headline show. More to be announced on this.
We will be announcing a lot more for 2018 – keep your eyes peeled.
Where do you see Skies In Motion in five years time?
Ideally we’d like to be touring and playing large festivals, generally having a good time playing music to as many people as possible. But we can totally see the world ending by then or at least everyone being semi-cyborgs or something, we can still hope though!
