Which Massachusetts rehab is the right one depends less on reputation than on three plain questions: where is it, can you sleep there if you need to, and how quickly can you get someone on the phone? Here are nine providers, answered on all three before anything else.

Outpatient programs serve people with a safe home who can keep a schedule. Day treatment fills most weekdays; IOP shrinks to a few sessions, often in the evening. Both suit parents, employees and students who need structure without leaving home.
Residential campuses serve people who need distance from their environment or round-the-clock support, and most also run detox for those still in withdrawal. Hospital programs serve people whose addiction is entangled with serious medical or psychiatric illness. Nonprofit networks serve MassHealth members, uninsured patients and anyone involved with the courts.
Many people use more than one. The common sequence runs from detox to residential or day treatment, then IOP and ongoing support.

Clinical care at New Wave is backed by a practical support team: two case managers and a peer recovery specialist work alongside the therapists, helping with the life logistics that often derail treatment. The team of ten also includes a clinical director, a program director and licensed clinicians, with a medical director referenced in the FAQ.
The program itself is outpatient and stepped. Roughly six weeks of day treatment, typically more than 20 hours a week, lead into about three months of IOP with day and evening tracks, and relapse prevention can continue for up to six months. According to the center, the primary therapist stays the same across PHP and IOP.
Holistic work is the signature. The center says it schedules sessions daily, from Reiki and sound baths to recovery yoga and mindfulness, next to CBT, DBT and medication management. Every owner is in long-term recovery.
Detox and residential care are referred elsewhere, and sober living comes through partners. Transportation is coordinated across the service area.

Serenity's Haverhill facility sits across from the local hospital, according to RehabNet, a convenient position for patients arriving from emergency care. It runs medical detox with a 24/7 medical team, then clinical stabilization, then a residential stage that usually lasts one to three months.
PHP and IOP continue the path, and sober living homes and aftercare follow. Therapy blends CBT, DBT and REBT with mindfulness, yoga and nutrition counseling, and a dual diagnosis program covers anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder and OCD.
The company offers financial assistance and payment plans for uninsured clients. Staff credentials, hours and prices are not on its site, though the Haverhill facility holds Joint Commission accreditation, per the company. MAT is available at the outpatient and residential levels.

Adults who want gender-specific or virtual programs |
Refresh's stated audience is broad and specific at once: veterans, first responders, professionals, college students, older adults, LGBTQ+ clients, parents, pregnant clients, court-ordered clients and people with chronic pain, among others.
Its Day Treatment runs full days, 5 to 6 days a week, for about 2 to 4 weeks; Half Day Treatment, its IOP, runs 3 to 5 days for about 4 to 8 weeks, mornings or evenings. Men's, women's and virtual versions are available, and the virtual tracks reach the whole state.
Therapies span EMDR, trauma therapy, music and vocational therapy and 12-step facilitation. The site names no accreditor and is silent on MassHealth.
There is no detox on site; the team coordinates detox placement and then brings clients into day treatment. A psychiatric team handles dual diagnosis, and the program also offers intervention services for families trying to bring a loved one into care.

People who need detox and residential care north of Boston |
RCA Danvers extends support to relatives through family support groups, family webinars and a lifetime alumni network. The campus sits about five miles from Salem and roughly 45 minutes from Boston.
Treatment runs from detox of typically 3 to 7 days to inpatient care of 30 days or more, then a six-hour weekday program and IOP with day and evening tracks, including virtual and hybrid options. MAT is prescribed on site.
The facility holds 239 beds, 58 of them for Section 35, and belongs to a for-profit chain. Newsweek ranked it #2 in Massachusetts in 2025.
Case managers handle FMLA and PFML paperwork, MassHealth applications and referrals for housing, legal and employment needs, and FastTrack admission lets hospitals transfer patients directly. Pregnant women and people returning after relapse are among the groups it names.

MassHealth members and people far from Boston |
Spectrum's footprint reaches the state's western edge: its North Adams site even accepts Vermont Medicaid. Other outpatient clinics include Haverhill, Saugus, Waltham, Weymouth, Worcester, Framingham, Milford, Pittsfield and Great Barrington.
On the Westborough campus, NERC provides commercially insured detox of 5 to 7 days and residential care of up to 28 days, while separate MassHealth programs offer detox, stabilization and longer residential stays.
The nonprofit dates to 1969 and holds CARF accreditation for multiple programs. Its clinics provide counseling and medication rather than day treatment.
Peer recovery centers in Lawrence, Lynn, Marlborough, Southbridge and Worcester add community-based support. The split between commercial and public programs can be confusing, so ask admissions which side your insurance falls on.

Washburn's parent chain runs FORTITUDE, a program for veterans and first responders, and the facility is in network with the VA Community Care Network.
The Worcester campus delivers detox, residential care, PHP and IOP, with MAT and aftercare planning. Chain-wide therapies include EMDR, CBT, DBT and a family program.
Official pages omit bed count, staff and hours, and directory ratings vary widely.
Insurance is the other draw. The in-network list includes Aetna, BCBS of Massachusetts, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Tufts, MassHealth through MBHP and several Medicaid plans, and benefits checks usually come back the same day. The company says admission is often possible the same or next day.

McLean's Belmont campus houses a 21-bed co-ed inpatient detox unit and an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Program partial hospital, according to a 2021 overview, drawing on the psychiatric resources of a Harvard-affiliated hospital.
Residential care continues at Naukeag in Petersham and at the self-pay Fernside residence in Princeton, priced at $70,500 for 30 days.
MassHealth limits addiction coverage to outpatient care, per McLean, and no IOP is described.
The LEADER program serves law enforcement, active duty military and emergency personnel, and Fernside placed #1 in Massachusetts on Newsweek's lists for 2024 and 2025. Insurers usually need to precertify inpatient and day treatment. The division is led by Roger D. Weiss, MD.

Southeastern MA residents, including court-involved adults |
High Point's Meadowbrook campus in Brockton runs detox and clinical stabilization for men and houses the Men's Addiction Treatment Center for Section 35 commitments. A women's counterpart operates in New Bedford.
The nonprofit also provides methadone treatment, outpatient clinics and six recovery homes, and GuideStar reports it treats patients regardless of ability to pay.
In Plymouth, a lakeside campus adds detox for men and women, stabilization and a dual diagnosis unit. A community behavioral health clinic provides 24/7 crisis services. There are no sites north or west of Boston, so for most North Shore or Central Massachusetts residents it is not a practical option.

Boston adults with medical or psychiatric conditions |
Brigham's program brochure says it is accepting new patients for medication management visits, offering FDA-approved medications for alcohol, opioid and tobacco use disorders. The hospital sits across from the Arnold Arboretum.
Inpatient detox, a weekday dual diagnosis day program and a two-week evening program complete the services. There is no residential level.
The day program runs 9 am to 2:45 pm, Monday through Friday, with daily individual counseling and a full psychiatric evaluation. Evening groups meet three nights a week and are capped at nine. The Bridge Clinic offers rapid, low-threshold access, and outpatient visits can be virtual. Addiction psychiatrists and licensed clinical social workers lead the clinical team.
The first call usually lasts minutes and leads to a free insurance check. An assessment follows, by phone or in person, covering substance use, health, mental health and home life.
In residential care, days are full: morning groups, individual sessions, meals on a schedule and evening meetings. Day treatment keeps that structure for most of the weekday, then sends people home. IOP meets a few times a week. Hospital clinics may center on medication visits with counseling attached.
Most programs plan the next step before discharge, from IOP referrals to sober living and alumni contact.
Expect the first week to feel crowded with forms, introductions and schedules. Ask for a written weekly timetable on day one, and if family will be involved, sign the release that lets staff speak with them. Those two steps remove a lot of early friction.
New Wave Recovery Center in Salisbury and RCA Danvers both offer outpatient programs on the North Shore. New Wave is outpatient only, while RCA also provides detox and inpatient care.
Yes. Refresh offers virtual day treatment and IOP statewide, and RCA Danvers offers virtual and hybrid IOP.
Washburn House accepts VA Community Care and runs a veteran and first responder track, and Refresh lists a veterans program.
A Massachusetts law allowing courts to commit someone to addiction treatment. RCA Danvers and High Point run dedicated Section 35 programs.
Most programs accept self-referrals by phone. Some hospital programs use referral lines and may need insurer approval first, and court-ordered placements under Section 35 follow a separate legal process.
Prices are rarely published. Several providers offer payment plans, sliding fees or financial assistance, so ask during the first call.
