SLAM DUNK Festival is in its 11th year as a prestigious, annual UK festival, taking place over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. Kicking off the Summer Festival season with an almighty bang. It will also feature its iconic, intense after parties as well as eight stages of pure musical brilliance from some of the hottest bands in the scene.
This year, SLAM DUNK will appear at:
Leeds – City Centre
Birmingham – NEC/Genting Arena
Hatfield – Forum
Last year’s line up was already tough enough to beat, but it seems SLAM DUNK have surpassed this in some avenue’s after going for a slightly more Pop Punk route. Laced in some nice Metalcore and Hardcore outfits to appeal to all audiences. Despite some controversy from the metal-heads and mosh pit fanatics, it’s been living up to the hype and build up thus far.
However, you can’t help but admit that bands such as Northlane, The Amity Affliction and Heart of a Coward were immense last year? Right? Can we get a “Fuck yeah” for heavy music?
TOP 10 BANDS TO WATCH:
10) SYLAR – Metal/Hardcore (Queens, NY, USA)
Groovy and punchy, with breakdowns, rap verses and powerful hooks, Sylar are one to watch if you love spending your time in the air or in the mosh pit. After the release of their album “Help!”, the New York hardcore juggernaut is out for blood and has a violent selection of solid tracks such as Assume. Head on over and give them 25 minutes of your day during SD’17 and let us know how it went down.
9) COUNTERFEIT – Punk/Rock (London, UK)
Currently on Tour in Europe after releasing the aggressive animal that is “Together We Are Stronger“, Counterfeit are probably one of the only bands to capture that nostalgic feel of grunge and hard rock and coat it in a modern masterpiece. They have such a powerful stage presence, testosterone fuelled and a real uppercut to the jaw. The London based punk/rock Outfit are running wild and can’t be silenced. A real force to be reckoned with.
8) CASEY – Melodic Hardcore (South Wales, UK)
After continuous support from a small dedicated audience and the praise of bands such as Capsize and Being As An Ocean, Casey are set to play three huge UK festivals this year, including Slam Dunk, Impericon and Download. And if that isn’t impressive enough, they are preparing to tour the Heaven and Hell Tour with Thy Art is Murder, Miss May I and Being As An Ocean across Europe. The extremely heartfelt and solemn melodic hardcore titans are ready to break your heart after the huge success pouring from their debut album “Love Is Not Enough“.
7) OCEANS ATE ALASKA – Progressive Metalcore (Birmingham, UK)
Despite Jamie Harrison‘s departure recently, Birmingham’s very own Oceans Ate Alaska have had some extensive touring with bands such as Chelsea Grin and Lorna Shore. The sadistic powerhouse that was Lost Isles was full of technicality and was one of the strongest releases of 2015 and it seems they are geared up for another round of touring in preparation for their sophomore album. These are probably the heaviest band you can get at SD’17 so hurry your ass over to their set.
6) MEMPHIS MAY FIRE – Metalcore (Dallas, Texas, USA)
Ahh, Memphis May Fire, such an iconic band that implements hardcore hooks and rhythms into a metalcore vessel. Beautiful cleans, beautiful guitar work, just perfect. They have toured with numerous big names and now, for the second year in a row, are back again to demonstrate why they are such a dominant band. So what more reason do you need. Get near the front and witness one of the biggest names in modern metal.
5) BOSTON MANOR – Rock/Pop Punk(Blackpool, UK)
Petite. Not widely known, but still, great things come in small packages. Boston Manor released “Be Nothing” last year and made themselves known to be something carefully and diligently constructed out of powerful elements. With songs such as “Laika” definitely worthy of sing backs, high energy and plenty of crowd interaction. Only formed in 2013, this outfit are on course for something magnificent!
4) MOOSE BLOOD – Pop Punk (Canterbury, UK)
Hot from touring with Pop Punk/Metalcore pioneers A DAY TO REMEMBER, Moose Blood were only a small collective hailing from Canterbury. In such short time, they have probably become one of the best Pop Punk bands in a very long time, displaying great talent, memorable live performances and on record, sounding as beautiful as a summers day. If you came to SD’17 for your dosage of Pop Punk, then overdose on some Moose Blood!
3) NECK DEEP – Pop Punk/Hardcore (Wrexham, Wales, UK)
Another outfit who had the honour to be main support for A DAY TO REMEMBER this year alongside Moose Blood, Wales’ own Neck Deep mixes Pop Punk and Hardcore Punk into a severely interesting and addictive mix. They are poised, and full of intensity, and scarily enough, have played smaller festivals such as Coventry’s Godiva Festival before blossoming into the potential modern day Blink-182. Watch this space.
2) BEARTOOTH – Hardcore Punk/Metalcore (Columbus, Ohio, USA)
It’s always nice to see a good slab of UK bands, but some love needs to be shown to the acts from the states, and one of those who are a definite top 3 is Ohio’s BEARTOOTH. If they aren’t on your list to watch, then get a pen, start listening and make some notes. Because if there’s any warning, it’s going to get heated pretty quickly in the pit. So lace those Vans and New Balances up and get spreading that shit from front to back, side to side, wall to wall gaping with the biggest Mosh Pit you can get.
1) ENTER SHIKARI – Rock/Electronic (St Albans, UK)
The headline, the head of the Hydra. The very reason why tickets sold quicker than a crazed cheetah on amphetamines. Enter Shikari are here to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their release “Take to the Skies” which features the song that started everything for this sensational band. YOU KNOW IT! *Clap, Clap, Clap* “SORRY YOU’RE NOT A WINNER!”. The absolute banger that has caused undeniable amounts of liver damage due to it’s drinking game. Enter Shikari will lead the night out in style before the after party. They have conquered all, playing festivals such as Reading & Leeds and many, many more. They even gave a lovely little statement about SLAM DUNK and what it means to them, find out below:
“Slam Dunk is a festival that we’ve been attending from the very start! It’s grown into one of the most important festivals in alternative music, and it will be an absolute honour to headline it in 2017.
We’re going to be celebrating the 10 year anniversary of our debut album Take To The Skies, which feels totally mental in and of itself. The fact that we get to reminisce and relive tracks we recorded so long ago, and that are still held dear by so many, is something I could have never anticipated back then and fills me with appreciation for everyone that has supported this band over the years.” – Rou Reynolds
RUMOURED SPECIAL GUESTS?
The potential special guests is always the fun part. The even used guests with an “S”. That means multiple acts! But the money seems to be on Bury Tomorrow and While She Sleeps as the main suspects to be added as late joiners.
We could even see Napoleon on the bill, as Oceans Ate Alaska are due to tour with them in readiness for Tech Fest 2017. This is quite possible, as we have seen both Boston Manor and Casey come into fruition – where both acts are playing SD’17 due to touring together just days before the shows start.
We could even see some Hardcore bands show up such as Obey The Brave, Shields and the incredible Silent Screams who just toured with Asking Alexandria… BUT WAIT!
PLEASE! Bring back Thy Art Is Murder & Architects – WE MISS OUR OLDER SLAM DUNKS TOO!
At the end of the day, I think we can all agree, this year is going to be another one to remember. And we all at Invicta hope to see your smiling, drunk faces at one of the 3 dates across the UK. Have an amazing time and have fun!
