Hardcore, especially hardcore metal, is a genre that can be extremely satisfying. Potent with aggressive, powerful energy – it’s got one, fierce and rabid bite to it. And sadly sometimes, it’s notorious for negative reasons.
There is always one overwhelming positive element. And that is the emotion, honesty and pure devotion within the hardcore scene. So, when bands like Walls make an unexpected tremor in the music industry with their upcoming release Cult of the Weary (due for release March 27th, independently), you can see why these things are something to treasure.
Self recorded, mixed and mastered, this collective have worked extensively, with plenty of reflection and diligence. And it is always refreshing when a band takes patient steps like this. If you are a fan of The Ghost Inside and Stick To Your Guns, imagine their love child, except they were a little experimental, and maybe a little curious. That is Walls – you have a solid, tight and well organised, passionate band hailing from Belgium.
The strongest song on this incredible album has to be given to The Generation You Hate Is The Generation You Raised. 4 minutes and 31 seconds of pure excellence, punchy hooks and chuggy breakdowns that scrape the surface of the metalcore genre. Lyrically it speaks volumes, and the message is something Invicta advises any reader to listen to carefully. The motif of corrupted leaders and disillusioned minds really is something that needs addressing especially with our social climate raising with tensions created by bigotry and a lack of leadership.
Ball and Chain, Such a Weight is also another top contender, with it’s intro building up with such spite and ferocity. This 6 track EP is something to really sink your teeth into and enjoy with a great deal of depth and substance. We can all agree that Walls are definitely here to stay.
Walls add flavour and spite to the Hardcore genre, speaking loudly about vital and crucial contemporary issues within society, globally, nationally and locally. Musically powerful, it packs one hell of a punch!
