If not anything else, The One Hundred are a very impressive act. Taking elements of metalcore and combining them with synth and rap is a hard thing to accomplish, only really performed to perfection by Enter Shikari in recent years. Taking this formula and curating a more aggressive creature to tame, the band have developed Chaos + Bliss, which shows itself to be more mature than their initial EP release, and put themselves on the map as a force to be reckoned with.
Opening track Dreamcatcher brings the energy instantly with a punchy riff and shrill piercing screams, and sets the album up with a stupendous amount of energy, only aided by the bridge’s raw electronic break. The album refuses to cease its swagger as the album leads into single Monster, which despite feeling a little too long stands as a punchy tune that serves as enough to get any dancefloor moving. Its violent chorus gives the song huge room to swing its arms, and shows The One Hundred to be incredibly competent in blending their technical elements, knowing exactly when they’re required and not to show their real expertise. Developing in such a niche genre can be a difficult feat, but the band appear as though they’ve been at it for years with their fantastic energy and competence.
The album keeps up the energy with high-octane Disengage, which stands as one of the punchier tracks, competing with arguably the best track on the album, the album’s title-card Chaos + Bliss which swings in later on in the album. The track slowly develops into an angry, abstract and abrasive track which forcibly holds the audience with frontman Jacob Field’s huge bars and screams, standing as one of the most aggressive tracks of the year so far with huge double-bass pedal slams to boot.
The One Hundred have broken through with a hugely impressive album, and the anger mixed with their massive swaggering attitude to making music meld together to create a real beat. This releaase is aptly titled, as the chaotic nature of the album (to a metalcore fan) can only be described as a truly blissful experience.
