Here’s a question you won’t have been asked in a long time…have you heard that new grunge band? If the answer is no then you’re missing out on what is possibly one of the best debut EPs I’ve ever heard. If you were hoping Bax and Dom were looking to start another hardcore band after Dead Harts you’d be wrong – but don’t be too disappointed because their new project is more than you could have ever dreamed of.
First off I recently interviewed Bax over the phone and one question in particular he was more than pleased to be asked was “how did you start a grunge band without making it sound like a throwback EP?” and you can see all that over in the interview, but the reason behind that question was because while listening to Welcome to the Family it felt new and exciting while maintaining thy key elements of all things grunge. It’s heavy, loud, distorted and the vocals are gritty. It’s got a crazy Queens of the Stone Age meets Nirvana style to it that honestly sounds special and is crying out to be heard.
Until the 19th May, the general public only have access to the single Radio Headphones and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Take the time to sit, listen, learn and appreciate what the family has gifted to us, because when the 19th rolls around and they drop the EP you’ll already have a feeling about what their music is all about.
The only fault I have with this EP is it’s only four tracks and that just purely isn’t enough but don’t be worried because if Bax is a man of his word a full length album will be coming sooner than you may expect. Personally I can’t wait, if everything they’re cooking up is as good as Ain’t Gonna Happen Like That and Nightmares and Daydreams we’re all about to have our minds blown.
Welcome To the Family is out may 19th and will be available online and at shows, so be sure to catch them either on tour with While She Sleeps or at whatever gig you can find that has them on the line up.
A welcome return for grunge with a new twist and fresh sound, for fans of Nirvana and queens of the Stone Age.
