Temptations Wings are a three piece metal outfit, driven by their passion for writing and improving their sound upon each release. Their latest work; Skulthor Ebonblade, is the dramatic and powerful tale of a legendary warrior embarking on a mind-bending journey of vengeance.
Temptations Wings portray the story admirably, effortlessly capturing the protagonist’s ambition and commitment to avenging his clan’s village through loud and forward riffs, dark and ambient tones and chest pounding drum beats. Micah’s vocals are clear and passionate, complementing the heavy, rich instrumental elements of his bandmates. His theatrical tone fits flawlessly within the the environment of each dramatic battle and struggle, as they are presented to us through the power of his guitar and Chad and Jason on rhythm section.
The album’s introductory song, ‘The Burning of Hjalmar’ offers a drum beat build-up behind an impending melodic riff. This combination of low notes and airy dynamics build a sense of mystery and calm that we later learn is the moment that our hero discovers his village burning in black flames. When combined with ‘I Destroyer’, Temptations Wings waste no time in launching us into the mind of Skulthor Ebonblade as he sets out his quest to retrieve an almighty sword of power for use against the witch that he will subsequently battle.
As the album progresses, we are transported through each battle and conflict; skillfully crafted lyrics allow for a true setting placement while Temptations Wings’ bouncy bass notes, dynamic drum patterns and engaging guitar melodies have your head bopping at the same time.
While ‘Skulthor Ebonblade’ is musically awesome, it can’t be overstated that it’s a seriously immersive album. In an industry that’s so heavily dominated by singles and quick-consumption music, Temptations Wings’ latest release is a refreshing reminder that there are bands out there that are still dedicated to the craft taking the listener to a new realm. Set an hour aside to listen to Skulthor Ebonblade and share his mourning, strife, devotion – and subsequent victory.
