The sound of passive waves and a sombre guitar tone signal the commencement of My Leviathan, the first track on the first full album from Reading sludge masters Morass Of Molasses before a massive and catchy riff crashes in and all hell breaks loose in the best possible way. The tracks colossal groove ducks and weaves throughout the tracks run in a way that brings the mighty Crowbar to mind but done in the bands own inimitable style. The self proclaimed swamp master generals continue the momentum made with their first released, the So Flows Our Fate EP from a couple of years back, but expand on it massively and display a confidence that would shame bands going for far longer than Morass Of Molasses have.
Tracks on the album like So They Walk with its Clutch-esque bluesy groove and the epic and perfectly named Serpentine with its slithering rhythms display a maturity that was hinted at on their first release but fully comes into fruition here. The interlude The Ritual adds a brief moment of calm from the non stop riffing of the bands music with it’s hypnotic chant before the band get back to business with the heavy boogie of Centralia and the mournful and the crushing Maenads, a song that sounds the much missed Acid Bath reborn. The album finishes off with Wrath Of Aphrodite and this proves to be a perfect way to conclude These Paths We Tred, an anthemic monster of a tune that typifies the Morass Of Molasses sound in almost seven minutes of pure rock fury.
The band put in a great performance throughout the album with vocalist Bones “The Beard” Huse proving what a powerful set of lungs he’s got and guitarist Phil “The Mountain” Williams cranks out crushing riff after crushing riff. Holding it all together at the back is drummer Chris West and his pounding and punishing performance behind the kit is the reason he is nicknamed “The Beast”.
Morass Of Molasses have proved they have what it takes to get bigger and bigger with a monster set of songs on this album and their huge sound will be a formidable experience when they these songs are played live.
The swamp master generals debut album is the shape of things to come from Morass Of Molasses.
