Madball are one of New York Hardcores finest bands and one with a faultless pedigree when it comes to the genre and Pennsylvanias Wisdom Of Chains are a part of a newer breed of hardcore bands (although they have been around as a band for the past fifteen years!) that keep the flame burning. On this split release which is aptly titled The Family Business, the two titans of East Coast hardcore join forces and it is a match made in hardcore heaven. Both bands contribute a brand new song each and it is a joy to gear fresh material from both of them.
Madball and Wisdom Of Chains share a similarity in sounds but more than that, they share a positive outlook with their music and it is demonstrated in style on this split. The offering from Madball is entitled For The Cause and is a bruising slice of NYHC and sees frontman Freddy Cricien sounding as good as ever as he barks out his heartfelt lyrics (such as “You can’t hold me back, You can’t set me back, You can’t hold me back, we go on and on and on, keep on, keeping on”) over the bands hard hitting groove.
Wisdom In Chains track Someday (a track that also features an appearance from Cricien) is a faster affair that has a crucial Oi vibe (and fittingly and Agnostic Front sound to it too) to it but retains that groove and rock solid hardcore spirit and rounds the split off perfectly.
The only thing that is wrong with The Family Business is that it is only two songs but when they are strong as they are, then it is perfect for repeated listens straight after the last notes of Someday have rung out.
This is a vital release from two vital hardcore bands and hopefully they will both have new albums forthcoming in the new year, hardcore needs them!
New York and Pennsylvania collide with two huge slabs of hardcore that is ready made for the pit.
