REVIEW: Fire From The Gods – Narrative Retold (Album)

By David Silver · On May 21, 2017

Hardcore metal band Fire From The Gods have released ” Narrative Retold ” which is a reissue of their debut 2016 album ” Narrative ” via Rise Records. Included on the reissue is a couple of new tracks including song “ The Voiceless ” which the band have an accompanying music video for.

Having come across Fire From The Gods last year when they released the video for ” Excuse Me ” which we thought was a fresh take on hardcore and a song worthy of capturing the attention of metal heads world-wide. Now we’ve got our hands on the reissue ” Narrative Retold ” we sure aren’t disappointed with what the band have delivered. This is an onslaught of catchy grooves, heavy guitars and hypnotic vocals lines. Hitting the scene last year with their debut album ” Narrative ” which was well received the band decided to release a reissue this year with some new tracks for “ Narrative Retold “.

The album kicks off with new track ” The Voiceless ” which starts out with a cinematic style intro that cascades into a track that shows the heart and soul of the band, with a fast paced verse and strong chorus and chants of ” The world keeps spinning “. Here’s what vocalist AJ Channer had to say about the track ” The Voiceless is referring to the callousness of society. This generation is exposed to so many shocking and graphic events. No one seems to bat an eye. There is no compassion or care for one’s fellow man. Violence towards each other is a normal occurrence factored into our lives these days. Speaking up about it is nothing new, but it needs to be said. Yes, the world will keep spinning, and life does go on, but we need to slow down and smell the fucking roses once in a while. ”

Addressing issues of the current state of the world and society the band certainly have a message they wish to put across in the form of music that has a Nu- metal feel at times, but without sounding like a carbon copy of bands we grew up with in the late 90’s and early 00’s. Adding their own hardcore style to this Fire From The Gods have an appeal that will draw listeners in and keep them hanging on for more.

Our favourite track is ” Public Enemy ” which is a heavy track that doesn’t let up for second. Imagine Asking Alexandria style instrumentals with the love child vocals of Benji Webbe from Skindred and Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust coming together to bring something a little bit special that no one else is really doing at the moment.

The rest of the album is top notch and definitely worth a listen with tracks ranging from gritty heavy to lighter groove. Included on the reissue is the new tracks ” The Voiceless ” and ” The Taste ” with an acoustic version of ” Excuse Me ” also been added in.  ” Narrative Retold ” was released 19th May and is available now.
