So Archivist are a self proclaimed “super group” hailing from all over the world. Described as ambient metal (sorry, “ethereal” metal), I was quite keen to hear what Construct had to offer. I was hoping for something like Fallujah’s The Flesh Prevails (an all time favourite of mine) but was met with something thoroughly boring.
I actually really struggled to listen to the whole thing, somewhat groaning every time I realised I had to put it on. It wasn’t that it particularly grated on me and the musicians aren’t by any means not talented, but I just couldn’t enjoy it. It seemed I was just listening to the same track over and over. I think if the vocal rhythms were more diverse I’d have better things to say about it, but I find “dur dur durrrr, dur dur durrrr” (lyrics may be a bit different) unimaginative and lacking. The music is top notch but this boring repetitiveness ruins it. If Construct were an instrumental album I’d probably like it more.
I can hear a spot of inspiration from the likes of A Perfect Circle, Baroness and even very early My Chemical Romance. All ingredients for something delicious but it hasn’t been cooked as best as it could.
It gets a 6 from me, because it’s not unpleasant to listen to but it could definitely stand some improvement. I like the idea behind it so I shall keep an eye on Archivist but I’ve had enough of Construct for the time being.
