Monday’s are shit, let’s face facts, no one likes the first day back at work. But when you have an absolutely terrifying and harrowing line up consisting some of the best northern bands, you instantly change your opinion. The particular Monday we are speaking of has become one of the better days of your week. Cheer up! Sit down! Take a good fucking read!
From Sorrow to Serenity and Lotus Eater. Two of the hottest bands from the cold, harsh and bitter lands of Scotland, bee-lined their way to Subside to put on a devastating and heavy set, infectious with groove and packing a serious punch.
It was a free entry show, so it means no excuses, every man, woman and child should be attending. But the case seems to be that Birmingham has collapsed slightly, and become over-saturated. Where the Hardcore/Hardcore Punk scene has taken the lead. This means other genre’s don’t get the recognition they deserve sadly.
However, the turn up was still a small, dedicated collective who threw down, interacted with the bands, and showed a great deal of respect, pint in hand, applauding and cheering after each onslaught of crushing riff after riff.
After Interviewing From Sorrow to Serenity and Lotus Eater (which can be found in our other articles), we sat around, awaiting the first act.
Opening the show sharply at 7:30pm were Tides Apart. Who sadly didn’t get much of a turn-out but still played a head-bang worthy set. Their live sound is something that needs refining, and some investment. Purchasing more equipment will definitely go a long way and help ensure their lower tuning has greater clarity. They had the energy and passion, and did surpass the unfairly low expectation of the crowd, but it felt as if there are a great number of bands doing something similar. We applaud their style for being something ‘radio-friendly’ and buzzed around the edges, giving it a rough feel, but they will eventually find their way and develop and grow as they gain experience.
After setting up in a swift and professional manner, we had the East Midlands, Hardcore/Metalcore collective REVEALER take to the stage. Backs to the audience as the introduction to Homewrecker roared through the speakers. The energy levels soared within a matter of seconds, with Alex Griffiths (Vocals) hyping the crowd up before screaming the lyrics with such unmeasured passion and emotion. He was even kind enough to let us guest on the lyrics provided by Joe Edwards from Shields on the 2016 debut EP “Losing Sight“. The crowd threw down, space opened up dead center, and everyone got involved. It was fantastic to see people giving their all, especially on a Monday evening. If you love bands such as Wage War and Architects, then check out REVEALER, you won’t regret it.
Second to last, with the night progressing swiftly, we had Lotus Eater stand before us. We really didn’t want this evening to start drawing to a close, but it was going out with a bang.
The conceptual, groove metal monoliths who are the main support act for the entirety of the Golden Age Tour effortlessly proved why they are held in such high esteem. As the lights dimmed down, and the intro to Gloom began to flare everyone up. We slowly became trapped in the gaze of a cold, violent trance. The brutal, progressive sound of the guitars sent everyone’s heads whipping back and forth, legs stomping, and fists pumped in the air. Hot from releasing their self-titled EP, Lotus Eater performed a somewhat brief yet punishing-ly heavy set from start to finish. The affiliation with Sharptone Record’s very own LOATHE has granted them a stepping stone forward, and it’s great to see them getting the exposure they deserve, playing show’s such as tonight’s.
And last but by no means least, we had From Sorrow To Serenity crush everyone’s skulls with perfectly groove-y and technical guitar riffs, lethal drum beats and sadistic vocals, delivered with such clarity and depth by Gaz King. The crowd turned to one and another to witness the wild expression on each other’s faces, some of pure delight and some of shock at how incredible the northerner’s were in their element. Kicking things off with the iconic, devastating anthem Illusive from the Remnant of Humanity album, From Sorrow To Serenity began to drive the nail deep into the crowd, sending them into a mass frenzy. Headbanging and grinning in delight, singing back lyrics and cheering upon the announcement of them playing their latest single The Golden Age. It was the second time seeing them, since their show with Slaughter To Prevail (alongside Belial and Harbinger) for their Chapters of Misery EP Release in Camden, London. They have improved substantially since then, as if they couldn’t have got any better, well guess what, they did.
Overall, the show was beyond an absolute treat, and for a free show, you couldn’t have asked for a better performance from each of the acts, providing you with high end entertainment, powerful musicianship and engaging live performances.
And please note… You only have yourself to blame if you are fool enough to not catch bands like this, do not sleep on this at all. You will only be sorry!
Revealer, Lotus Eater & From Sorrow to Serenity set Birmingham ablaze with three, powerful and destructive sets that blow your brains over the walls like a Jackson Pollock painting. Intense, Aggressive and full of Energy, it is a definite one to remember! Keep a watchful eye on these guys.
