It’s a warm summers night in Camden and the air is alive with people going out to enjoy themsleves of a Friday evening, but our excitement for the evening lies at The Underworld which is the heart of metal in Camden. For tonight August Burns Red will be gracing its stage once again. It’s been a few years since the metalcore giants have played The Underworld and tonight they have a sold out show, with another date added for the Monday due to demand. This tour is to mark their ten year anniversary of the album “Messengers” which they’ll be playing in its entirety tonight. This is going to be one unmissable show.
Opening tonight is up and comers Napoleon who are firing things up for tonight’s headliners. The venue is half packed at this point with Napoleon facing a tough crowd of die hard August Burns Red fans with no other support bands on the bill. Napoleon played a blistering set with lots of people head banging along, but it didn’t quite win this crowd over completely but I’m sure certainly made a few new fans tonight that haven’t heard of them previously. As their set came to a close The Underworld started to get more full with everyone eager to see ABR up next.
The time has finally come as the lights darken once again and ABR storm the stage, kicking straight into ” Truth Of A Liar ” which instantly gets the crowd moving and roaring each lyrics word for word with frontman Jake Luhrs who dominates the stage naturally and looks very much at home. This perfectly sets the tone for what’s in store tonight for fans as ABR bring everything they have and more to London tonight.
Getting a sneaky glimpse of the set list from side stage I can see this is going to be a night to remember. After such a blinding opener the band continued on with the songs ” Up Against The Ropes ” and ” Back Burner ” by this point we got pits opening up and fans jumping on and off stage, the only way to describe it is utterly insane and we are all loving every minute of it. Their set gets better with each song continuously ramping things up with ABR being one of the most impressive bands you’ll see, being true veterans of the metal scene delivering their set with style, energy and raw passion that reaches out to every single person in that room from the front to the back.
Just when you think things can’t get any crazier the band kick into fan favourite ” Composure ” and the whole venue erupts with renewed energy and thirst for all this metal goodness. After thundering through more hits including ” The Eleventh Hour “, ” Vital Signs “, ” Black Sheep ” and “ Redemption ” drummer Matt Greiner and bassist Dustin Davidson played an outstanding three minute drum solo to the delight of the crowd showering us with some technical drum excellence.
The night so far has been outstanding and ABR have been on point tonight with guitarists JB Brubaker and Brent Rambler executing each song with precision and skill whilst bouncing around and taking full advantage of what little stage space they both had. This is how you come to London, play The Underworld and own it! They brought the evening to a close with the awesome new single ” Invisible Enemy ” (which if you haven’t heard yet definitely go check it out), ” Empires ” and ” Ghosts “. Definitely one of the best shows we’ve seen this year and can’t wait for ABR to return!
