The team at Invicta are dedicated to delivering the latest music news and updates (big or small) to our followers but with festival season getting busier by the second and the mighty Kendal Calling festival making a steady approach, we thought we would pool our resources together and offer you a selection of the bands you should be listening to in preparation.
1. Smash Hi-Fi
Time to embrace the inner raver and indulge in an intense electronic DJ session with Leeroy Thornhill (occasional keyboardist for Prodigy) and Marten Horger as they charge through an array of drum and bass, hip hop and massive music drops that will leave the sweat dripping and thick beats flowing. Hits including “Bombs n Beartraps” and “Blacklights” will have you and your friends heart’s pumping with the rest of the rave nation they have entertained for years.
2. Liam Bailey
An eclectic name of contemporary soul, reggae and blues alongside artists such as Benjamin Clementine and generation trend setters such as Sam Cooke, is currently soaring into the eyes (and ears) of many with his soft, luxurious vocals. Nottingham-born Bailey has assisted fellow musicians throughout his career including co-writing Chase & Status’s “Blind Faith” and collaborating with DJ Fresh and Shy FX.
3. Gallowstreet
Many opportunities to dance can be found at this year’s Kendal Calling festival but there are only a few that offer the chance to get down with a catchy combination of instrumental north sea jazz, hip hop and pop music. Releasing their album ‘Battleplan’ in June 2016, the Dutch twelve-piece are sure to have you showing off your moves with uplifting tunes and a sizeable amount of bad ass brass.
4. She Drew The Gun
This wonderful quartet of Indie psych-poppers have been on a winning streak in terms of growing shows including a prestigious appearance at this year’s Glastonbury festival, receiving positive feedback from everyone that witnessed their set. The full band and ethereal (and slightly sinister) element of frontwoman Louisa Roach’s sound was developed after meeting James Skelly who expanded her EP into an album and the rest is rich history.
5. Idris Elba
No, he will not be working alongside a purdey’s edge stall or installing sky box sets into your bunk pad but he WILL be on site, endeavouring to bring its occupants a healthy smattering of brash remixes and incredible energy to dance their feet sore to. The renowned actor has not only conquered the television screen in the Luther series but is also identified for his cinema roles in Star Trek Beyond, The Jungle Book and the Thor film series while establishing yearly DJ residencies in top Ibiza destinations including Pacha & Pikes.
6. Molly Warburton
It is seriously hard to turn down an acoustic artist who has received nothing but complementative criticism, which is exactly what the young Lancaster-based singer has been given by a number of peers and music experts. Originally taking influence from Simon & Garfunkel and KT Tunstall, Warburton slowly widened her gaze and quickly matured as not only a lyricist but as a guitarist as well with her latest single “Hallucinate” catching attention in the music industry.
7. Blaenavon
English Indie pop is not difficult to come by in this day and age but it is difficult however, to find out that is more than the generic sticker you can find forming in any part of the country. The trio known as Blaenavon are one of these exceptional exceptions, forming in 2013, the band have leapt leaps and bounds in their field, producing a bulky fan base and extending their back-catalogue with every year that passed and with big tracks such as “Hell Is My Head”, “Orthodox Man” and “I Will Be The World” included in this musical portfolio, how can they hope to be challenged at Lowther Deer Park this year.
8. Colonel Mustard + The Dijon 5
Now who can honestly say they don’t enjoy luminescent yellow outfits, extravagant costumes and a disco-stamped certification reading ‘entertainment guaranteed’? No one, that’s who. Be prepared for the most unconventional, unusual and wonderfully weird acts to grace their stage this July as you may be forced to become involved yourself (all optional but all unquestionably amusing). Colonel Mustard and his glowing privates have been working hard to establish their brand of neo-psychedelia and Indie reggae beats.
9. Have You Ever Seen The Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS?
Yes? no? Well regardless as to whether you have or not, this is not a random off-topic question thrown to you out of pure curiosity. It is in fact the title of an extremely interesting indie rock outfit from Finland. These three musicians have taken the modern music scene and rewound it and integrated various styles of music through the progressive passage of time including soul, dream pop mania and a bubble gum-covered trip through 60’s-esque music.
10. Yucatan
It seems to be all about the Welsh lately with the glorious Stereophonics and Manic Street Preachers taking up big headline positions at Kendal but it’s also the smaller acts that need your consideration and none more than Welsh-orientated Yucatan. Even if you can’t speak the celtic language, that will not hinder the enjoyment in any sense as the sweeping instrumental motion between gorgeously grand and snowflake delicate is the perfect incentive to stay, watch and take pleasure in a fantastic band.
