Last time we spoke to Rarity, the Canadian punk rockers told us about their massive success in just the first twelve months of being a band, the secret behind their hit Anne Hathaway and how eager they were to visit the UK. Now that the band have finally made it across the water, we catch up with an interview…
Hello boys! First of all, let’s start with a quick catch up. I spoke to you last in December 2016 – what’s changed since then?!
We wrote and recorded an album! Following some tough member changes that year, we were feeling pretty out of it and not ourselves. That said, we’re so flipping excited to be back now at 110% and touring Europe and the U.K.!
You’re finally on that Europe tour you were eager to go on. How is it a few weeks in?
It’s everything we dreamt it would be and more. Europe was fantastic to us. So hospitable and the shows were off the wall. Some of the best we’ve ever played for sure! Tonight we start the U.K. leg of the tour with a sold show in London!
Tell us all the gossip about being on tour with Casey and Endless Heights. Who parties the hardest? Have you played any pranks on each other?
Oh man, the bands have bonded so well on this tour it’s like every night is a party. Endless Heights go pretty hard. I don’t think this is really a prank but we keep changing the lyrics to their songs to Borat quotes and singing them until it’s stuck in everyone’s heads.
Do you have any funny tour stories you could share?
Aha well like the day before we left for tour we had gone to Oxford to be tourists and we got our Van locked inside a parking lot. We came back from the school to find the lot closed with huge gates and tall fences. Everything we owned including all our gear was stuck inside and we had to call our TM’s parents to pick us up and bring us back in the morning! We owe everything to Mr and Mrs Day! They saved us.
How are you finding the Europe so far?
Europe is amazing. It seemed like everything we saw was older than our whole country aha. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour to bring us to this part of the world for the first time. We’ve had crazy shows and made some of our favourite memories ever as a touring band.
Travel wise, what has your favourite place been to explore so far?
We had a ton of fun exploring Cologne the other day. We found giant gothic cathedrals, chocolate museums and a drum-only super store! Definitely one of our favourite cities we’ve ever been to. Germany in general has been an amazing place to explore!
Is there much difference between touring Europe and the US?
For sure. Europe puts a strong emphasis on hospitality when putting on shows. Every city has been so kind to us and helped us eat and find places to stay. It’s very heart warming seeing the respect they give to touring artists!
So the US is really well known for having tons of oddball roadside attractions. What weird stuff have you witnessed since your time in Europe?
Nothing weird I don’t think, but we made an effort to see as many landmarks as we could! We’ve seen Dunkirk beach, the Eiffel Tower, the Cologne Cathedral, and ton of other historic places!
Maybe we can make you a bucket list of the UK’s top roadside attractions for next time you’re over here..!
We would be insanely into that. Our TM is English so we’ve been forcing him to take us to everything he can think of aha.
Last time we talked, Evan shared with us his dream gig line up. What’s everyone else’s?
Cole- My Chem, Taking Back Sunday, The Used
Adam- Being As An Ocean forever
Corbin- Coheed and Cambria with Rage against the Machine headlining.
Loeden – Nsync
Tell us all about your new album. What was the process behind recording that?
It’s our favourite thing we’ve ever created. We spent a month in Toronto with producer Sam Guaiana honing in on and recording our best songs to date. We played with a ton of new sounds and vibes and are very excited to show everyone what we made.
What’s next for Rarity?
We’re finishing up this Europe/U.K. run, working on the release of our new record and then some cool summer plans! World domination aha. Thanks so much for these fun questions!
