Metal giants August Burns Red have hit the U.K’s shores again and this time they are here to celebrate the ten year anniversary of their album Messengers. The band are on top form with a newly released single and a string of sold out shows on their recent tour. We got to catch up with one of their members in London, here’s what guitarist Brent had to say when we caught up with him…
How does it feel hitting the ten-year anniversary of Messengers and playing the album in its entirety for your fans?
Its great people are excited every night and the U.S has been the biggest we’ve done to date. It’s been a lot of fun, but we weren’t sure how people would react to old songs as when this record was released we were usually the opening band. So, we had to go back and learn all the old stuff including some songs we’ve never played live before but it’s been fun and different playing this set compared to just the hits
What’s each of your favourite song off Messengers?
Black Sheep is my favourite as well as most the other guys because this was the foray into what we could become later
Are you excited for tonight’s sold out show at The Underworld and have you played here before?
Yes we are excited to be here and we’ve played here a handful of times before. We were originally only on planning doing one date but due playing a smaller venue we done two dates at The Underworld with the first being sold out
You’ve release a new single ” Invisible Enemy ” what can we expect from the new album?
The new album is very aggressive the new single is very heavy and groove orientated but there are a lot more songs that are more thrashy with the next song we are putting out being insanely fast and so hard to play
Your sound has progressed through the years keeping things fresh by experimenting where do you get your inspiration from?
None of us really listen to too much metal there’s a handful of metal bands we like other than that it comes from other genres we listen to. I listen to a lot of punk and indie rock, if I’m listening to metal it’s usually something like Deafheaven or Earthbreaker. I think most our inspiration comes from the outside influences we listen to for instance J.B (Brubaker) loves Paul Simon. To keep things exciting and interesting to us we bring in these different influences
Outside the band do you guys have other projects or things you are working on?
No not really. I mean Jake (Luhr) has Heart Support Foundation and Matt (Greiner) has his drum company. Myself and J.B manage the band.
What’s the best show you’ve ever played?
The last time we played Summer Breeze Festival it was in the middle of nowhere, it was pouring with rain, the bus had to park a quarter mile away. We were like ” This sucks get us out of here ” but then we get on stage and the crowd is absolutely massive with everyone going bananas. Third or fourth song we knew it was the best show we’d played in the last five years and can’t wait to go back again during this tour
What’s your favourite song to play live?
Right now I’m really enjoying playing the new song “ Invisble Enemy ” which is new and fun. I also really like playing ” The Blinding Light ” from Messengers. Also ” Provision ” is a fun one but we aren’t playing it this tour but love playing
